HUNGARIAN CHAMBER OF ENGINEERS (MMK)

The Chamber of Engineers is an independent public body of engineering At the dawn of system change in 1989, we, engineers, decided to raise responsible engineering work to a suitable level. Although the initiative started with a small group, thousands of engineers across the country joined us within a year. This broad support made it possible for the engineering society to start on a new path, organizing its professional self-government. Nevertheless, we worked for almost seven years to ensure that the Parliament enshrined our aspirations into law. In 1996, the parliament adopted the law by unanimous vote, which elevated the municipality of planners and expert engineers to the status of a public body in chamber form.

In the storms of the past two decades, many institutions, new and old organizations did not stand the test of time. The public engineering body also changed when it faced the challenges, we had better and worse years, but we built our organization soberly; today we have 19,000 members and we authorize another 12,000 engineers.

We represent the interests of our profession, but at the same time, the chamber is neither a trade union nor a corporate body, with which the government of the day consults from time to time. The chamber is a community of interests and values, which can fight for the necessary frameworks for engineering work, whether it is of a knowledge nature, related to the conditions affecting the work or related to remuneration. We strive for the engineer to be seen by society as one of the most important keys to the technical and financial success of engineering facilities and projects. However, the appreciation of engineering is mostly measured by the work of engineers. The chamber can be strengthened by the innovative, developing and creative work of its members, the engineers. In our country, every engineer has the opportunity to shape their municipality and use the knowledge inherent in the professional community. In addition, as a public body, the chamber also carries out public tasks stipulated by law: it assesses, authorizes and nationally registers professional rights for chamber members and chamber registrants, contributes to raising the professional and ethical level of engineering activity, and also to the development of technical regulation, standardization and quality assurance systems. It continuously cooperates with the institutions and ministries responsible for higher education, participates in the development of qualification and further training requirements, and organizes further training for qualified and certified vocational engineers.
